For this semester our new project is called 'GOTHIC HORROR'. When I heard the title for the first time I was really excited and couldn't wait to start- I still can't wait :D But when I thought about it I realized that I actually don't know that much about it. Our main task for this project is to create our own design for Estella/Pip and Miss Havisham from Charles Dickens novel 'Great Expectations'. We have to show our development of the design through posting research of the historical background-Victorian Era- but I also want to include modern aspects. For the second part we have to create a design for Claudia and Quentin, which will be characters for a TV series intro. For that part we are going deeper into Gothic. We will also learn how to do burns, bruises, scratches, cuts and aging. I am really looking forward to that because I find those parts of the special effects very interesting. Also those new skills will help us to create all of the designs we nee to do this semester.
I know some facts about the Victorian era but I will definitely need to do some more research. What I know so far is that the hair during the Victorian era was very elaborate as were their dresses. Also the industrialization was a major thing during that time ,bringing problems like a too high populations and therefore the development of the slums. Also the difference between the social classes were very high. But I will do a separate post about the Victorian era.
When it comes to Gothic I had a general idea what Gothic is to me but I started doing some research on Gothic already, and realized I didn't know much :) Again I will do a separate post about that as well.
This time I want to make sure to do even more research and have a better understanding of the historical era as well how features of the historical era are nowadays combined with our society. For instance modern Gothic. Or how Gothic is used for movies (especially Horror movies :) ) but also in music and music videos.
Even before we got the project brief I saw different versions of Charles Dickens 'Great Expectations' and I also read a few of his books ( I have got the whole collection at home, but too little time to read them all!). So I was familiar with 'Great expectations' but of course I need to go deeper to see how other people tried to portray the characters in their film adaption or theatre plays. The reason I bought the 'Great Expectations' version from 2011 was because of Douglas Booth:) He played Pip in it and well he is just very good looking ^^ Haha!
Well hello handsome ! :) :)
To try to understand Charles Dickens better I decided to go to the Charles Dickens Museum in London in two weeks with my friend. I think it can be beneficial for my research. Hopefully I am allowed to take pictures inside it, so I can make a nice blog post about it :)
