Overview to Claudia and Quentin + chosen TV series

 As I have no glue how to upload my power point presentation here, I decided just to write everything that was on it  :)

1. My chosen TV series

• as my TV series I choose Supernatural-> I choose Supernatural as it is one of my favourite TV series and because our project is Gothic Horror I think Supernatural has a broad variety of characters and creatures on which I can base my characters on
• the setting is North America, back flashes could show other countries as well if it is necessary for the story

2. Audience Demographic

• I would say that a variety of people watch the show->young teenagers, people in their twenties , even some older women, the series was supposed to attract young males but now more females are watching the show
• why appealing? because first of all the male leads are all very attractive which appeals to the female dominating audience; then there are the troubled relationships in the family, the loss of loved ones, the urge to have a happy live but also the struggles with the dark inside yourself. I think those are things 'everyone' can relate to. And even though it is fictional people want to see how the characters are coping with those things and think it will maybe help them as well. Of course our families are not haunted by actual demons or other creatures but it is about the basic problems between humans; I wouldn't say that the setting was that important; then of course there are special romantic relationships within the series but one thing which is properly most appealing is the Dean and Sam brother relationship and definitely the Dean and Cas relationship-> stans call them Destiel ^^; another factor is of course the broad variety of supernatural creatures->from demons to vampires, ghosts, shapeshifters, angels, witches, werewolves, gods, and so on. There is nothing that does not exist in this series. In some episodes they also referenced classic horror creatures such as Dracula, Frankenstein, Lucifer. But they also touched on the urban myths section

3. First Character

• my first character is Claudia
• she was neglected by her parents, likes watching horror shows
• she is also agoraphobic and barely leaves her apartment
• she has an imaginary boyfriend called Quentin which can change completely depending on Claudia's mood-> but you can read more about Claudia in the Character introduction post
• the setting would be her apartment as she does not like to leave her apartment as said before
• Claudia will be part of a new case Dean, Sam and Cas (and maybe Crowley) are looking into
• She will be appealing to the audience because of er background story->no parents and that she literally is just a broken soul who tries to life live, I think that she is agoraphobic will also have a huge impact

4. What key word did you choose to develop your first design?

• I have 3 key words that hopefully fit with my character. I am just not sure about the whole key word thing  as I don't understand all of them( and I tried to find out) so I picked some which should fit-> For my first character I want to use the key words 'Save Us'. ' Awakening' and ' Veil' . I choose them because Claudia wants to be saved( save us) from feeling miserable, weak and abandoned, after making a contract with a demon she changes and the demon secretly lingers inside her (veil) and later when she gives in to the evil(=demon) it is the awakening. 
• setting of scene: the setting will take place in Claudia's apartment which is filled with dolls, I got my inspiration for that from the Supernatural 2x11 episode 'Playthings'

• Claudia will also look like a broken doll and has high up twin tails, even though her face is supposed to look creepy the rest should look dolls-like-innocent
• she happens to meet Dean, Cas, Sam and Crowley because they are after a certain cross roads demon which happened to be the one who granted Claudia's wish and is now possessing her-> side note: Crowley used to be the boss of the cross roads demon before he turned into the king of hell->that's why he will appear as well

6. Second Character

• My second character is Quentin, Claudia's imaginary boyfriend
• he is being victimized by Claudia and suffers a lot under he new evil self
• for my design I thought of using the angel banishing sigil on Quentin, but it is meant as a metaphor. The angel banishing sigil originally casts angels away if the person who draw the sigil with their blood touches it and because we see angels as something good and pure I want to use the sigil on Quentin to show that the demon possessed doll like Claudia tries to cast away Quentin's good side and make him empty and part of her doll collection
• setting will be the same as for Claudia;the apartment
• I think Quentin will appeal to the audience to a certain amount as he is the "damsel in distress" here

7. What key word did you choose to develop your second character?

• For Quentin I would use 'Glass Prison' as he is trapped in Claudia's little word and can't escape as she has power over him
• as said the setting will take place in Claudia's apartment
• Quentin has an injured right eye which is covered with bandages and has the angel banishing sigil drawn onto the left side of his neck

Introduction to Claudia and Quentin

For our second project we were supposed to design characters for a our chosen TV series.

We had to design the Makeup and hair design as well as the general outfit the characters would have. We also have to create a story on how they fit into the chosen TV series.

Those are the character profiles of Claudia and Quentin as well as Miss Laderman ,who is Claudia's neighbor. But because we were only supposed to choose two characters I decided to go for Claudia and Quentin because I already had some ideas in my mind.

"Claudia

Claudia is a girl in her twenties. As a child she was left alone to develop with little parental guidance and through her relationship with T.V. movies developed an unhealthy relationship with Horror films, believing this to be the way life really is.

All the scenes take place in various parts of Claudia’s apartment, which is European in style with
a great deal of kitsch décor. She is agoraphobic and is kept in touch with the outside world by her neighbours who provide her with her every day requirements.  She models herself on a variety of girls often twisting her look to suit whichever film she is watching at the time and there is often
a nod to the main character in the current film within her appearance.

The script portrays her as psychotic and there is always the feeling that although her character is scripted/can be seen as humorous, danger is just around the corner.   However all this is normal to Claudia and she is of a cheerful disposition in this mad world of hers.

Quentin

Claudia has an imaginary boyfriend, Quentin, who is long suffering and a constant disappointment to her. They don’t live together but he visits regularly and they talk on the telephone if he can’t get in to see her. As he is part of her imagination his appearance changes to suit her mood. Sometimes he will be a David Beckham looking guy, whilst in another scene he will appear as a Pete Docherty type, Daniel Craig type or a Hollyoaks Babe. If she is having a bad day he will morph into an uncouth couch potato chav with all that brings with it.

He is as into the horror film genre as she and into role-playing to suit her whims and moods.

Claudia has a paranoid suspicion that he is constantly having affairs behind her back and keeps him firmly under her thumb, sometimes restraining him or keeping him prisoner in one of the rooms.

Mrs Laderman

Claudia’s neighbour in her 40’s. She alternately changes into a variety alter egos and is Claudia’s friend and confidant. Living in the apartment opposite, she was Claudia’s only link to the outside world. Although they are friends there is suspicion that Mrs L’, has designs on Quentin. In fact she has designs on Claudia."

Recreating Catwalk look, GROUND ZERO, Paris Fashion Week S/S 2014

For my recreation I choose the contemporary Geisha look from the Paris Fashion Week S/S 2014.

Generally it is a quite simple look but still I had some difficulties because of the choice of products.

I used:

• Kryolan super colour in 070, 509, 071
• Illamasqua translucent powder
• Kryolan eye shadow palette in black pepper
• Illamasqua cream blusher in Libido

->apply base using Kryolan super colour palette in 070 (you could also mix a bit of the Illamasqua skin base into it)

->blend well

->as seen in the picture you make the face look oval shaped-> don't go with the base to close to hairline 

->using Illamasqua translucent powder and powder well

->now while doing this look during the lesson I applied the black eyeliner first but I think it's better to apply the yellow first->makes it much easier!

->after applying the yellow (used yellow super colour (509)) powder it with the saffron from the Kryolan eye shadow palette so it won't be sticky anymore

->also I forgot to bring in an eyeliner that's why I used black (071) super colour  to create ther winged eyeliner which is not recommendable , then every time my model opened her eyes, even though I powdered the black, she got those nasty black stripes in her creases, and she opened her eyes a lot

->and because I had to keeping cleaning up the mess the white turned slightly grey, which was very annoying

->because my model has already very dark eyebrows I didn't had to do much, just applied a bit of black pepper from the Kryolan eye shadow palette

->lastly I used the Illamasqua creme blush in Libido for the lips, I used that one because it is a very nice bright red

 here in the first two pics you can see that the eyeliner is more pointy and sharp. Fanella suggested to smudge it out a bit with a baby bud because mine (as you can see in picture number 3) was quite thick at the end

-> I will definitely recreate this design again on myself/or someone else using different products

->main change will mainly be switching from black super color to proper eyeliner

->the red creme blush is already shiny but you could add a bit of clear lip gloss

So I redid the look on my sister while I was home during Easter. Apart from changing the above mentioned points also left out the white on the eyes when applying the base, because it's just getting dirty after applying the yellow and black anyway.When doing the eyes I stared with the yellow stripes using yellow eyeliner and the above the eyeliner yellow supercolor and eyeshadow. Then I did the winged eyeliner with the L'oréal Super liner Blockbuster. After finishing the details of the eyes I applied the rest of the white.

I didn't really like how the eyeliner turned out because I wanted the eyeliner to be more pointy at the end but it didn't really worked out when I tried to thin out the end.

Gothic

This post will be a short introduction to the Gothic.

Gothic is very broad as they are Gothic literature, Gothic art, Gothic architecture, Gothic horror and then all those many subcultures when it comes to Gothic 'fashion'.

And I think I could spent hours here writing about everything which I don't want to do:) 

That's why I decided to only talk short about each category and just give some examples.

Gothic Literature:

• the Gothic fiction is largely dominated by the Gothic horror genre
• Gothic horror combines most of the time romance and horror, gives the reader a certain thrill
• leader in the Gothic horror fiction was Horace Walpole with his novel 'The castle of Otranto' from 1764
• other famous author's were: Mary Shelley- Frankenstein, 1818; Bram Stoker- Dracula, 1897; Ann Radcliffe- The Mystery of Udolpho, 1794; Emily Bronte- Wuthering Heights( I love this novel by the way), 1847; Oscar Wilde- The Picture of Dorian Grey, 1890; Robert Louis Stevenson- Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, 1886; Anne Rice- Interview with the Vampire, 1976; Patrick McGath- Asylum, 1996, Charles Dickens- Great Expectations. 1861  and of course Edgar Allen Poe- The Masque of the red Death, 1842 ( and of course many many more)

• the key points of Gothic horror are: the uncanny, sexual power, crisis, the sublime, the supernatural and the real(ghost, vampire, other supernatural creatures), strange places/haunted houses/ Gothic architecture, terror vs horror, death, mystery, darkness
• Gothic authors got their inspiration from the medieval times, superstitions, rituals/occult, dark fantasies
• mostly set in the past and women are mostly the target

Gothic Architecture:

• key points of Gothic architecture: flying buttress, pointed arch, ribbed vaults, rose window, spire, at least one tower-often more- and of course gargoyles.

• Gothic architecture in London: Big Ben, Palace of Westminster, St Pancras railway station, West Norwood cemetery and a lot of churches like the Sacred Heart church in Wimbledon or St Luke's church in Chelsea
• other famous Gothic buildings: Rheinstein castle in Germany, Notre Dame de Paris, Notre Dame de Reims
• evolved from Romanesque architecture and had its peak time during the mid-late medieval times
• originated in France in the 12th century and lasted into the 16th century
• the Gothic architecture during the Victorian time would later be called Gothic revival architecture

Goth Subcultures:

• this page has a nice and very cute overview of  the different subcultures within the Gothic
• when I started to have a look at it I didn't even know where to start as it is so broad and I had no idea that there were so many different sub genre as I only new the 'stereotypical Goth'
• here are some  sub genre I found on the already mentioned website: Medieval Goth, Hippie Goth, Vampire Goth, Mopey Goth, Tribal Goth, Romantic Goth, J-Goth (Japanese Goth) and of course the Victorian Goth
•  the Goth subculture is a contemporary subculture and established in the 1980's in England, with he start of Gothic rock
• a thing I also found while looking through the Goth subcultures was the fashion part, especially Haute Goth-> Karl Lagerfeld hosted in 1977 the Soirée Moratoire Noir party, specifying "tenue tragique noire absolument obligatoire" 
• but also designers such as Alexander McQueen, Rick Owens, John Galliano, Christian Lacroix, Philipp Plein, Thierry Mugler and Jean Paul Gaultier brought Gothic elements on the catwalk shows

Gothic Music:

• it is quite hard to find exact facts about Gothic music but it all started with the Gothic Rock which is a subgenre of alternative rock and post- punk
• established in early 80's late 70's
• origins are England and Germany 
• because I don't know much about Gothic music I had a look at the 20 best Goth records and I can't believe what I found. One of my favourite tracks! Haha I didn't know it was Gothic because I heard the song first in the Movie Elvis & Anabelle (starring Blake Lively  ♥-  I love her so much ^^). But yes as I am thinking about the movie now the movie definitely goes in the "Gothic Horror"( it is not a horror film but has key points of it ) direction as well. 

So therefore my first Gothic song will be

But I think as there are so many different Goth subcultures , it depends really in which Goth subgenre you are when it comes to Goth music. I bet there is a huge variety as well. I just remembered Nightwish was also 'quite' popular and I think they are also Gothic.

Then I was thinking about Gothic in music videos. Of course this could be part of the Goth music but I found a few music videos were the band is not doing Goth music but  have Gothic key points in their music Videos. At least I think they are kind of Gothic looking :)

Let's start with one of my favourite bands

Is a German Neue Deutsche Härte/ industrial metal band and was founded in 1994.

I literally grew up with them as my dad is a huge fan as well and we were listening to them all the time. Even though I wouldn't suggest to let small children listen to their music :D

Then there is also the Korean boy band Vixx . They had several music videos now which were kind of dark. Also the settings and concepts reminded me of Gothic.

I also find that in a lot of J-Rock(Japanese rock) music videos the setting and clothes/makeup are very Gothic inspired.

Creating wounds using molds

->good for continuity

->can do all shapes of scars and wounds

->use non porous mold

You will need:

  Pros – aid (glue for sticking on prosthetics)

·         Pro clean ( pros- aid remover)

·         Barrier foam/cream

·         Translucent powder, Illamasqua, or baby powder

·         Kryolan super colour

·         Wound filler

·         Blood

·         Kryolan ultrafoundation

·         Witch hazel, cleanser, moisturizer

·         Baby buds

·      ->   Before applying gelatine or latex apply barrier foam

·     ->    Gelatine and pros- aid are good for people with sensitive skin, most of people are highly unlikely to be allergic to it

·     ->    Petrolease(spray)- you spray it in mold before  putting the gelatine in it, you can also use Vaseline

·      ->   Apply pros- aid on the mold as well as on the part of skin where you want to apply it

·      ->   Make sure to wait until it is clear otherwise it won’t stick on properly

·      ->   Also make sure to apply glue on all the edges as well

·        -> When glue is clear stick it on skin and press it down hard, especially around the edges

·      ->   The apply witch hazel on a baby bud and melt down the edges, so it will blend in with skin, take your time doing it

·     ->    When done powder

·        -> To thin down colours mix it with cleanser or moisturizer

·      ->   Colours have to look translucent and NOT fake!

·       ->  Don’t press down the mold with a cotton pad, it will stick to adhesive and you have fizzy bits on it then, use rather a tissue

·      ->   Once the mold is powdered you can start colouring, colour in the mold how you want it to be

·      ->   I did a gunshot so I applied some of the 079 and 081 from the Kryolan super colour into the center and blended it out a bit, then I mixed 071 and 081 and applied it around the center

·       ->  Then you can fill in with wound filler

·       ->  If the mold has same skin colour as the person you are doing it on you don’t need to use foundation to match skin colour, otherwise do it before you start colouring

·       ->  At last you can apply the blood

·      ->   depending on what kind of  wounds you are doing you can also apply Vaseline for shine

->I noticed that while I was melting down the edges with the witch hazel the mold fell apart/crumbled apart instead of blending in really-> so I started powdering it in between and then blended again, then powdered again, blending in, powdering, blending in-> that worked better

'What the Dickens...' project evaluation

I definitely had my high and lows during the ‘What the Dickens..’ project. I originally choose my partner because she had very long/thick hair and I thought that’s perfect to work with and you can do so much more with it, than with someone who has short hair which is true but I did not foresee the problems I would have with the hair during the Estella assessment. Everything was fine for the Miss Havisham design as I had almost all of the hair up into a huge bun but for Estella I wanted to do a mid-late Victorian hairstyle were the curls are coming down in cascades. But during the practice I realized that because her hair is so long and thick it is too heavy for the kind of curls I wanted to stay in. Also it took me almost 2 hours to curl all of the hair( and in the end it didn't look like my design), so I panicked that I would not be able to finish in the time we only had. But luckily Lottie went over my designs(on the day of the assessment!) with me and gave me tips on how to manage with the time and what to do with such long hair. In the end I was quite satisfied with my Estella assessment even do I was in a very bad mood during the assessment because I was still panicking. But overall I found the brief very interesting and fun to do as I am a fan of the Charles Dickens novels. I think I learned a lot during that time especially when it comes to how to create ageing, wounds and other sort of illnesses. It was also a challenge because we had to keep the designs historical and were kind of limited with our designs.
